Dental Hygienist Career Outlook

A recent report from the government says that there will nearly be 33% more dental hygienists in 2018 as opposed to today.  This makes it one of the fastest growing occupations in the country.  What remains unclear, as we’ve discussed here many times, is how much of this growth will come in the part time versus the full time sector.  Part time hygienists are becoming increasingly popular for many dental clinics.  The problem for many is that the cost of education, at least at first, demands a full time position to help pay off debt.  Nevertheless, the staggering growth rate represents strength across the board is sure to come.

Education Needed to Become a Dental Hygienist

Many people wonder what type of education is needed to become a dental hygienist.  Many are especially interested because of the dental hygienist salary being rather high.  In fact, it is one of the best paying jobs for the degree level required.  That degree level is usually an Associates degree or AA.  That is to say, most dental hygiene programs are completed as an AA.  Many private offices look for students with the full AA degree as opposed to just the certification without the degree, which is possible at some of the nearly 300 programs across the country.
